Round Dinny’s by Brandon Bailes

I have been checking out the Round Dinny’s Brandon Bailes has been tying as of late and they are really cool little bugs. I asked Brandon to give me the lowdown on what inspired him and the process he goes through to create these little gems.

The original Round Dinny was made back in the 1950s and 60s by the Accardo Company. Tony Accardo of Baton Rouge owned the company which was located in Louisiana.

Brandon had this to say.
“These are the first bugs that I’ve actually painted in years and I was inspired by Kirk Dietrich’s book Tying Bugs. The round Dinny was one of the first “flies” I used as a kid…..I would buy the Accardo brand at a local gas station and I have lots of memories using them for redbreast, bass, rock bass, bluegill, and chain pickerel.

I used cork balls made for whistlers as well as hard foam indicators. Slotted them, sanded a flat spot on the bottom, mounted on hooks, filled gaps/voids. Then painted with acrylic paints using brushes and metal dowels of different sizes to add dots and eyes. Finally used Raidzap thin as a top coat and allowed them to sit in the sunlight after the UV torch for a few hours before tying the tails on.”
