An articulated Deceiver without bucktail, but instead using a very suitable synthetic alternative called Pike Skinz. I like to have some wiggle in my fly and by tying this way and using the material sparsely it swims real nice. I’ve deliberately not speeded this tutorial up to allow me to explain the steps in more detail and for you to follow and tie along.

Flies using FrankenDub Nymph Dubbing

I haven’t posted in a long while about FrankenDub Nymph Dubbing. It has been doing quite well and there have been many fly tyers who have tied with it and enjoyed it. I wanted to highlight some of the fantastic flies I’ve seen tied with it so far, here in a post. FrankenDub Nymph Dubbing is a special blend designed and created by me. If you are looking for a buggy dubbing, you can’t go wrong with this and it dubs easily too. Give it a try on dry flies as well.
It is available at J.Stockard Fly Fishing, so check it out!

Thanks,
Paul

Polyphaetis Nymph – Andy Saunders

This is a nymph designed to ride hook point up to avoid snagging, but still be able to get the fly down deep into the water column.
Andy shows us how to tie this type of a nymph because it uses a unique technique of tying in the bead.

Pink Squirrel Nymph

From Piscator Flies:
“The Pink Squirrel Nymph or as it may also be known, the Persuader is a fly pattern designed by John Bethke of Westby, Wisconsin. The fly is a great choice for fishing in the winter and into the spring. It is an attractor fly but may be considered a scud pattern.

The fly is a popular choice for fishing the Driftless Area in Minnesota, Wisconsin, northwestern Illinois, and northeastern Iowa of the American Midwest and featuring the upper Mississippi River.”

Deerhair Dun – Michael Jensen

From Michael:
“My favorite kind of no-hackle dry fly. I use natural wool, that absorbs any kind of fly floatant easily. With the air filled body hair from deer this floats right in the surface – imitating a hatching mayfly dun.
This has been one of my go-to dry flies for more years that i care to think about :0) I even use it for sea trout dry fly fishing in rivers and saltwater. You can tie it in colors to mach any hatch – and wrap up a a dozen or two in an hour.”

NOTE: I would recommend using FrankenDUB Nymph dubbing for this fly. It would work very well. You can get it here: http://www.jsflyfishing.com/frankenfly-frankendub-nymph-dubbing

Faux Spey Spruce Fly SBS – Scott Patterson

Scott Patterson ties some really nice flies and works on a lot of step-by-steps. I have posted his flies here before. Scott had this to say about how he decided to tie this fly.
“Got the idea for this, in particular the winging sequence, from watching Davie McPhail’s Orange Heron Spey video. Took this as an opportunity to get some use out of a redhead skin (plus the fact that I have no blue eared pheasant or decent teal flank).”

tail – peacock swords
rear body – floss red
front body – peacock herl

collar – flank (redhead used here)
wing(s) – hen badger (2 per side)

Steffan’s Go-to Shrimp Fly – Steffan Jensen

From Tie-TV:
“In this episode of Tie TV, Steffan Jensen will tie a great all around shrimp fly that will work in almost any situation – it’s the perfect mash-up between a super realistic and a bright fly that reacts to UV light, as well as great movement in the water. Mainly designed for sea trout fishing but works great for perch and other shrimp eating fish too. “
