Schmidt’s Rattlesnake
Ray Schmidt talks about what many say is his signature fly and he shows us how to tie this baby. Ray was a fly shop owner in Michigan for many years as the owner of Schmidt Outfitters. I’ve heard a lot of great things about this streamer of his, so tie some up and fish’em!

The Snowshoe Hopper with Kelly Galloup
From The Slide Inn:
“Kelly originally tied this pattern to imitate small hoppers on the Madison, but it has proved equally as effective for larger caddis and spruce moths in late July and August. The Snowshoe hopper is also a great searching pattern, and is very difficult to sink despite riding low in the water.”
Materials list:
Hook: MFC 7000 or TMC 100 #12
Body: PMD Superfine Dubbing
Rib: UV Pearl Krystal Flash
Wing: Light Dun Snowshoe Rabbit
Legs: Small Speckled Tan MFC Centipede Legs

Boston Blackie Maine Featherwing Streamer 1920’s
There are times when a specific classic fly really grabs your attention and pulls you in to learn more. This is one of those flies. When I first saw this fly, I said, “Whoah, this is nice!”
So I sent a message over to Fred Klein, who tied it, and requested him to send me more information. So the details are below and I hope you enjoy this one as much as I do.
By the way, you can follow Fred over on Instagram @grizzlykingfly.

-Paul
From Fred:
“Originated by Carrie Gertrude Stevens of Upper Dam in the Rangeley Region, Maine.
Carrie, a hat maker by trade and the wife of a Maine fishing guide, used her skills to tie streamers for visitors to their camp. In 1924 she designed the feather wing streamer with shoulder feathers as gill plates emulating a minnow. She gained notoriety by catching a 6 lb 13 oz brook trout in the Upper Dam pool near her home and won second place in a Field and Stream contest. She became a professional fly tyer developing over 120 streamer patterns including the hallowed Gray Ghost!
The Boston Blackie, a relatively unknown fly, with its four black natural wing feathers and jungle cock green body feather is an exceptional streamer with the black and green hues that are perfect for wild brown trout as well as brook, rainbows and salmon.
Boston Blackie was a popular fictional character , a jewel thief and safe cracker turned detective first appearing in literature in 1917 then on to radio shows as well as motion pictures.
The fly can be fished on a dead drift as well as on the swing. It’s coloring and flash is naturally effective for clear and high water, an excellent choice for evening and night fishing for big predator brown trout.
We hope that you tie this forgotten fly with a history, and perhaps drift one downstream.”

Crayfish Fly Pattern by Svend Diesel
From Svend Diesel:
“Just a basic Crayfish Fly Pattern tutorial. I am sure that someone has tied a similar pattern out there, but as many of you know these patterns are super effective in catching fish. I love to fish these for trout, bass, carp and any other fish species that would eat a crayfish. I have tried other color patterns, but this seems to be the color combo that is most effective.”

Fish-Skull Sparkle Craw
From Flymen Fishing Company:
“Everyone could use a few good crawfish patterns in their fly box. The thing with crawfish fly patterns is you tend to lose them in the rocks faster than you can tie some of the intricate flies that imitate these bottom-dwellers. The Fish-Skull CrawBody on the Sparkle Craw makes tying a crawfish imitation foolproof and fast. But what is a Crawfish pattern if it doesn’t get to the bottom? The Fish-Skull Shrimp & Cray Tail gets the Sparkle Craw to the bottom in no time.”
Fly Recipe:
Hook: Kona Nymph Streamer 2XL (NS2), size #6
Tail: Fish-Skull Shrimp & Cray Tail, medium
Under Body: Ice Dub
Antennae: Magnum Sili Legs
Under Antennae: Fish-Skull Faux Bucktail
Rib: Mono
Over Body: Fish-Skull CrawBody, large
