Dave Brandt’s Flies

I reached out to my friend, John Bonasera to see if he knew any original fly patterns developed by the late, great Dave Brandt. There are two he mentioned, The Minonipi Wulff and the Extended Body Coffin Fly. I have included what John wrote back to me about these two flies of Dave’s and I also included a video of Dave showing how to tie the Extended Body Coffin fly, which is a really neat little pattern in my opinion.

The Minonipi Wulff

Written by John Bonasera

The Minonipi Wulff

“This is Dave’s fly, created by him when he worked as a guide at Coopers Minipi Lodge in Labrador. The Labrador area is world famous for its giant and healthy brook trout, and since many of the waterways there are shallow, dry flies are a popular method of fishing for them.
Dave started going up there around 1981, you can only access it by floatplane, as it’s as rugged and inaccessible as any place in North America.
You may know Lee Wulff was already a frequent traveler to the area, and Dave fished with him often. This friendship likely factors into why Dave was an instructor at the Wulff School of Fly casting for almost 30 years.”

Extended Body Coffin Fly

Extended Body Coffin Fly

“Another fly he is known for, but I’m not positive it is actually “his” fly, the extended body coffin fly.
On a #12 -94843 4X short hook, the body is poly melted with a lighter at the butt, with teal wings and white badger hackle.”

Here is a video from Dirk’s Outdoors showing Dave tying the Extended Body Coffin Fly.

Delta wing caddis with Barry Ord Clarke

From Barry:
“A delta wing caddis with an interesting body technique that can be put to good use in many other caddis patterns. With split wings and a segmented body, that is still encased in the shuck, this is a good pattern for a struggling caddis stuck in the surface film.”

FrankenFly online store and a little more

Hello to all! I hope this finds you well and you are tying flies at home and letting this craziness pass as well as possible. I had several emails while show season was in effect about the FrankenFly online store. It is back on now and I really appreciate the interest. With the cancellation of the largest show I attend in Michigan this month, I posted several flies on Instagram for sale, but they are all sold now. Thank you to all that ordered recently! But please check out my online store and see if there are any flies you are interested in. There are a couple of orders I am tying right now, but I’m tying and doing business as usual. See below some of the flies I’ve been tying.

On another note I have been working on designing a new shad style articulated streamer. I am happy with the way it finally turned out. You can see a photo below. This fly uses Dead Meat Custom eyes and a head inspired by Mike Schmidt. It was not swimming like I envisioned at first, but I made some adjustments here and there that put the finishing touches on it.

shad pattern

I plan to keep posting here on FrankenFly, so if there is anything you would like to see more of, please comment and let me know. I want to thank all of you for reading FrankenFly! Stay safe out there!

Kreelex Jig Streamer for Euro Tactics by George Daniel

You can learn a lot about trout tactics by listening to George. He talks about taking Chuck Kraft’s Kreelex and doing something a bit different to target trout. The material he is using is Kreinik Flash. You can get it at Eastern Trophies.
-Paul

From George:
“A variation of the legendary fly fisher Chuck Kraft’s Kreelex Pattern. A favorite for streamer fishing with European Nymphing tactics.”
