Caddistrophic Pupa – Charlie Craven

From Charlie Craven:
“Most insects have a certain streamlined appeal, but caddis pupae just look like something you pulled out of your nose. Their gnarley legs, gelatinous bodies, and budding wings combine to form one of the most unpleasant-looking bugs on earth, but trout love them. The Caddistrophic Pupa is built on a light wire scud hook to match the hunched up curve characteristic of the natural. Perhaps the most important and effective addition I have made to this fly is the CDC collar. When wetted down and saturated, CDC turns from an incredibly buoyant material to an incredibly lively soft hackle. I like to think that I have managed to take this ugly little bug and make it into something that has a bit of appeal to my eye, although as I get older I realize it really doesn’t matter what I want in the fly, it’s the fish who decide.”

Materials:
Hook: TMC 2487 #14-18
Bead (Optional): Black Tungsten Sized To Hook
Thread: 8/0 Olive Dun Or Black Uni
Rib: Chartreuse Ultra Wire (Brassie)
Shellback: Brown Super Floss
Abdomen: Olive Hairline Dubbing
Wing Buds: Brown Super Floss
Collar: Natural Dun CDC
Antennae: Cream Shrimp Fluoro Fibre
Head: Black Ice Dub

Hipster Dufus – Daryl Angler

I reached out to Daryl Angler about his carp fly, the Hipster Dufus, after reading an interesting post from him on Instagram. Daryl was inspired to design this fly by Jay Zimmerman. So check out what Daryl has to say about this fly and enjoy the pics from Daryl as well!

“Ahhhh, the Hipster dufus. This is the fly that really moved me in a particular direction with carp flies, and the inspiration came via Jay Zimmerman and one of his trout patterns. Jay had a trout pattern that was and still is crazy productive…his Banksia Bug (you can find it on YouTube here). That pattern was and still is so much fun to tie. It pushed me as a tyer and I find it creative and easy on the eyes. Jay’s Banksia Bug was the motivation behind the Dufus. It was so productive as a trout fly, I wanted to move that over to carp. In fact the original name was Banksia Carp Fly! After hundreds of beta versions of weighting and balancing the pattern I was able to hone in on this design, which is what is offered today. For those who have supported me and have fished the Dufus, THANK YOU!”

Hipster Dufus materials list:

Thread: UTC Wine, 70 & 140
Hook: Tiemco 2457 size 8
Eyes: medium bead chain-black
Lift Kit: two bars of 0.30 lead measured to length- 3-4 mm
Abdomen/body: Senyo Laser Dub or FrankenDub Monster Dub
Wing: Barred Wood Duck
Collar: CDC feather

A little about Daryl:
Daryl Angler is an avid fly fisherman and fly designer with a focus on carp flies, and he is often hanging with his family, stalking carp on a fly rod, or (yep, you guessed it) tying flies. Shortly after taking a fly tying class in 2017 and learning the importance of proportion and silhouette, carp fly design was close on the horizon. Word is, that he has tied every…single…day since the class started. With attention to detail throughout his designs, all choices are made with intent and purpose resulting in flies that are durable, versatile, and productive. After launching Nervous Water Flies in the Spring of 2019, he is looking to share his designs and help anglers across the country get into carp on a fly.

The Perfect Popper – Svend Diesel

Svend shows how to tie with the Perfect Popper. He also gets the Copic Air Brush out and shows how to use it. He explains more below.

From Svend Diesel:
“So the name says it all. This is a simple popper that comes in a kit with the popper and hook. All the tyer needs to do is attach the tail or rear section of the fly. The perfect popper comes in a few different models, however I want the ones made for the salt water that when tied to the hook remind me simply of the Rebel Poppers.
You can have fun with it and paint to your liking. I’ve added glitter to the clear coat of Flex Resin, but love getting out the airbrush and painting away. You can get as creative as you want because the sky is the limit.”

Materials list:
Hook and Body: Perfect Popper kit
Thread: Semperfli Waxed thread 6/0
Flash: Holographic tinsel 8-10 pieces
Tail: Whiting Farms american hackle rooster saddle
Resin: Raidzap flex resin
Eyes: users choice
Paint: Copic Markers airbrushed
