Pink Squirrel – Savage Flies

This is a cool pattern and a fly that I know about having known Matt Bethke who owns The Driftless Angler Fly Shop in Wisconsin. This is a well known pattern in that area.
-Paul

From Savage Flies:
“Created by John Bethke (circa early 2000s) of Westby, WI, the Pink Squirrel has found popularity throughout the Driftless region (and the west in general). A simple but effective fly, the pattern is thought to be a general attractor nymph or possibly even a scud.”

Materials list:
Hook: #10-16 heavy scud
Bead: Gold, sized to match hook
Thread: Brown
Weight: Wire, sized to match hook
Tail: Krystal flash
Rib: Red wire
Body: Squirrel fur (with amber Sparkle Yarn if desired)
Collar: Pink chenille (or fur on the smaller sizes)

Sherwood’s Micro Diver

From https://flymenfishingcompany.com/
Taking the Classic Deer Hair Diver to the Next Level.

By integrating the new Fish-Skull Chocklett’s Articulated Micro-Spine system into a well-established pattern, Braden Sherwood has designed a total winner – in fact, he won the recent Micro-Spine fly tying contest with this fly pattern.

The added movement and taper through the spines in this smaller diver pattern is fantastic.

Materials list:

Tail Section
– Fish-Skull Chocklett’s Articulated Micro-Spine – Tail Shank
– Small Saddle Hackles (can be replaced with marabou or any other tailing material)

Body Section
– Fish-Skull Chocklett’s Articulated Micro-Spine, 6 mm (3)
– Body: Cactus Chenille
– Wing: Whiting Soft Hackles
– Fish-Skull Chocklett’s Articulated Micro-Spine, 8 mm (4)
– Body: Cactus Chenille
– Wing: Whiting Soft Hackles
– Hook: Kona Universal Strong Streamer hook, size #1
– Body: Whiting Soft Hackles
– Head: Deer Hair
– Eyes: Surface Seducer Dragon Eyes, 6 mm

Flashy Deceiver – Paul Monaghan

From Paul M.:
“A flashy variant of the Bucktail Deceiver tied 5-6 inches long for easy casting, great movement and attraction for those toothy predators. A proven fly for searching water, which can be tied in any colour/flash combo you like. Once you have tied a few it will take 15mins to tie.
Something I forgot to show in the tutorial is that it helps running the fly under cold water to shape the bucktail.”

Materials list:
Ahrex Hooks TP610 2/0
GSP100 white
Bucktail in olive and sunburst
Hedron Polar in olive and gold
Hedron Pearl a Glow in lime
Bigstreamers Nayat in light olive, black and yellow
Angelina Fibre in peacock
Deer Creek Artic Fox in orange
Deer Creek Volcano eyes in 10mm
Deer Creek UV Fine Flex
Other glues: Tear Mender and Evostik Serious Glue

Joel Skoghäll Fly Tying

I’ve noticed the smooth fly tying of Swedish fly tyer Joel Skoghäll on Instagram and messaged him to find out a little more about him and some of the flies he ties.

“Joel Skoghäll, born and raised in Sweden, 29 years of age. I live in a small town of Sweden where I work as a high school teacher and run a small hobby fly shop on the internet together with my brother David where we offer my flies and clothing.

I started tying flies in 2012 and like anyone else I started scavenging all the books and internet to learn everything about this artform. The internet is really a tremendous source of information and much of my inspiration regarding fly tying comes from North America. What I think I enjoy the most in fly tying is the feeling that one can never be fully learned, whether it’s new techniques, materials, patterns etc. Tying flies is a problem solving process, a never-ending process and it feeds both my curiosity as well as the creative side of me which I’m happy for. I often say that fly fishing and fly tying is my kind of meditation, a way of releasing stress. I’m also thankful to Stefan Larsson (The Wicked Trout) as he has taught me a lot about the sport of fly fishing. He’s today not only my mentor but also a good friend of mine. Fly fishing and fly tying connects people all around the world and I have a lot of good friends today thanks to this.

When it comes to fly fishing 95% of the time I target brown trout in rivers up north in Sweden, and 95% of that time it’s with a dry fly. Yes, I’m a dry fly fisherman and nothing beats a trout slowly rising to sip down the dry fly. I fish both riffles and those faster waters with more attractor like patterns as well as crystal clear slow running waters with extremely thin leaders and delicate CDC flies. Fly tying and fly fishing is a passion that grows deeper every year and hopefully I can inspire someone else to start enjoying this world.”

Pike On The Fly | Like Hot Buttered Lightning!

Great video of my friends Josh McQueen and Brian Flechsig catching pike on the fly. It’s like hot buttered lightning!
Call MRO and get in on the action with guide Josh McQueen!

From Mad River Outfitters:
“This past weekend, Brian Flechsig of Mad River Outfitters went out with Head Guide of Ohio Fly Fishing Guides, Josh McQueen to do some pike fishing. Needless to say, it was a total blast.”
