New Book: Smallmouth Bass Flies Top to Bottom

If you want to know more about fly fishing for Smallmouth Bass, I suggest you pick up the new book by Jake Villwork, “Smallmouth Bass Flies Top to Bottom”.

This is a gorgeous book with beautiful photos throughout. On top of that Jake really goes through everything you need to know to catch smallmouth with a fly rod. He explains rods, lines, and leaders. Tools he uses for fly tying, seasonal strategies, and fly movement. He includes 16 of his favorite flies with step-by-step instructions on how to tie each one. With flies included, he takes you through each section of the water column, top, middle, and bottom. The icing on the cake is the over 300 flies with recipes from today’s top tyers.

Here is a brief introduction from the book.
“Smallmouth bass swim in lakes and rivers across the United States and Canada and are a premier fly-rod game fish in almost every way—they take flies readily, feed on diverse foods for a long period of time, tolerate higher water temperatures than trout, and fight harder than any other North American freshwater fish their size. This is the first book dedicated to the best modern flies for these fish that includes both detailed step-by-step tying instructions as well as top patterns and recipes for flies that cover the complete water column, from top to bottom. With over 500 full-color step-by-step images and 300 patterns by today’s top tiers from around the country, this book is the definitive resource for smallmouth bass.”

The book is available in many places, here are a couple links.

Ol’ Mr Wiggley update!

Ol’ Mr Wiggley

While reading through Jake Villwock’s new book Smallmouth Bass Flies Top to Bottom, I came across Ol’ Mr. Wiggley. This fly was designed by Charlie Piette, a guide and shop manager at Tight Lines Fly Fishing Company in DePere, Wisconsin. I posted a video about it many years ago and you can find that below which has Charlie showing how to tie Ol’ Mr. Wiggley.

Jake said in his book that he always has a fly box full of these in various colors, because they work so well for smallmouth bass, especially when fishing is slow. The one above in the photo Jake Villwock tied and it is in dragonfly damsel colors. In his book, Jake also shows that he ties a variation of Ol’ Mr. Wiggley that adds a little to the pattern.

I have also seen other fly tyers posting about Ol’ Mr. Wiggley being a productive fly for them. I can also see this being an effective fly for trout. So I would say if you are wanting to try a simple fly for top water especially for smallmouth or for trout, give this one a try.

Materials list:

Hook: Daichii 2461 size 4
Body: 2mm foam
Underbody: Ice Dub
Tail: Sili Legs (any rubber or silicon legs)
Side Legs: Sili Legs (any rubber or silicon legs)

Learn to tie our latest beetle fly pattern. We tie this in bigger sizes (10-12) but it can be scaled down to smaller sizes. For this pattern we prefer the Evazote style foam, which compresses easily when tying in and floats very well. You can find Evazote foam on our webstore, click the link above to find all the materials needed to tie this fly.”
