“On a number of northern Michigan rivers I’ve found that a 3.5″-4.5″ top water pattern is great at getting hits from the full range of sizes of fish at night. Traditionally on my folded back head gurgler-esque flies I had a long rabbit strip off the back. With that, it was often getting nipped and missing the hook. I wanted to keep the length, fly, and hook size so i made it articulated and added a front 25mm shank and put the B10S #1 hook further back with a small piece of foam allowing a shorter rabbit strip and better hook ups and a little extra wiggle with the joint. Additionally, I wanted a little more front float so tripled up the foam on the head. Lastly, for only reasons the fish know, the flashy/ uv flies just work at night here in MI, so wrapped uv polar chenille with the rabbit. Add some rubber legs and a little sparkle in the collar to clean it up and you’ve got an ideal night fly here in Michigan.”
