FrankenFly update 9-4-2014

All of you FrankenFly readers have been fantastic! Thank you for continuing to make this site one of your normal stop and reads!

I’ve been very busy lately trying to keep up with tying fly orders and thinking about what I need to add to the website. Tonight I removed the Instagram feed that usually appeared on the right side. I will still be updating the FrankenFly Instagram account, but on here I have decided to just put them in a regular post including information on each fly. I have included below the flies that I’ve been playing with lately.

Speaking of flies, I will be adding more flies to the FrankenFly online store as soon as possible. New additions are the Awesome, the correct Eggie Special, Griffith’s Gnat, and Halladay’s Hairstone. I do custom orders, so if you don’t see what you want, just send me an email and ask. The contact email address is on the About page where it reads “contact me.”

Some other fly tying knowledge that I have put my mind to lately is working on tying quality flymphs. I have some silk thread ready and I just received my Clark block from William Anderson. Read more about what a Clark block is on William’s website. More to come!

In between orders, here are the flies I’ve worked on lately with a brief explanation.

Beel's Caddis

Beel’s Caddis

After I witnessed a Fall Caddis or Autumn Sedge on a lake I was fishing last year, I’ve had an idea for this pattern. I finally threw it together and this is the result. Now it needs testing.

Hook: Partridge Long Dry Fly Supreme 10-12
Body: poly yarn – yellow
Hackle: rooster – brown
Wings: Brahma Hen – brown
Under Wing: deer hair
Antennae: stripped hackle stems
Deer Creek Diamond Fine UV Resin

Awesome

Awesome

This is the Awesome dry fly pattern. It is mentioned in Josh Greenberg’s book, Rivers of Sand, as one of his favorite dry fly patterns. This one was tied by me (Paul J. Beel).

Hook: Partridge Dry Fly Supreme size 12
Thread: Orange, 6/0 UNI
Tail: Moose Fibers, small clump
Body: Peacock Herl
Wings: Grizzly Hen Tips, tied down over the back
Post: Poly yarn
Hackle: Grizzly, tied parachute

blackstreamerNo name for this one yet. It is a work in progress. Needed a weighted streamer to get down in some of my local lakes. If you haven’t noticed yet, black works.

Fruit Cocktail Popper

Fruit Cocktail Popper

Doug Stout sent me the custom popper body for this fly. It is in Dave Whitlock’s fruit cocktail colors. You might remember Doug from the wicked cool vises that he builds for himself. Keep in mind, he does not sell the vises he makes. Anyway, he did a great job with the popper bodies and I liked the way it turned out.

Thanks again everyone! I appreciate you reading FrankenFly!

FrankenFly update

bbart

I thought I would take some time to update all of you FrankenFly readers on the happenings with me and all things FrankenFly, since I haven’t had the chance to do that for some time.

First, since this post is leading with an image, as you can see, I have brand new fly artwork from my graphics guy, Eryck Webb. I thought it would be cool to have some art for my Bearded Biscuit articulated streamer. I couldn’t be happier with the job Eryck did on this! I plan to have t-shirts made up soon. The Bearded Biscuit has caught some huge brown trout and some big bass. Fish dig the beard!

I have been planning to add more flies to the FrankenFly online store. I have many more classic Michigan dry flies to add, but I’ve been so busy tying orders, I haven’t had a chance to update it yet. That is actually a good problem to have. I also do custom fly orders, so if there are some flies you would like to have tied by me that you don’t see in the store, just email me and ask me about it.

As far as the website, I can always use more content for FrankenFly posts. So if you are a fly tyer and you have something to send me, don’t hesitate to do so. It could be anything about the flies you tie or original patterns you have designed. But it could also be anything fly tying related, like a specific technique, tip or trick, etc. Look for the contact link on the About page here if you don’t already know my email address.

Finally, in about a week, I will be heading to my favorite places up north to vacation and fish in Pure Michigan. I hope to have some nice photos and summarize the trip on my return.

Once again, thank you for visting and reading FrankenFly. It means a lot to me that all of you keep coming back and enjoying the website. Thank you!

Pumpkinseed of Doom

In between tying orders, I’ve been doing some creek fishing recently. A few days ago I spotted a nice sized gar that I’ve been itching to catch. He took a bite of my fly the other day, which was a Grandpa’s Chickenhawk, but I couldn’t get him hooked. If you have ever tried to catch gar, you know the feeling. They are hard to hook because of their long narrow mouth with teeth.

In this same water there are Pumpkinseed Sunfish and I have a feeling the gar love them. There are flies made specifically for gar from nylon rope because it will get entangled in their mouth and you can pull them in that way. I didn’t want to do that, so I created this little Pumpkinseed of Doom to try out. It includes John Rohmer’s Arizona Simi Seal and a bit of Senyo’s Laser Dub. I tip my hat to the guys at FlyFishFood for turning me on to Simi Seal, it’s great stuff. I gave the fly a trailing Intruder hook for good measure. This is not a big streamer, it is a small one. Perfect for small creek fishing.

So I went out to the creek yesterday to do some fishing. I was not able to get a good look at a gar like before, but it was fine by me, because I was rewarded anyway. A nice Smallmouth Bass grabbed a hold of the Pumpkinseed of Doom and gave me a good fight. He made a few runs back and forth and made two jumps trying to shake it off, but couldn’t. To my delight, I was able to bring him in. Man I love Smallies, they are so tough!

I have not given up on the gar. I will continue to hunt for one. I’ll definitely be tying up some more Pumpkinseed’s of Doom to take with me, no matter what I’m fishing for.

FrankenFly t-shirts are ordered!

FrankenFly_Logo-Col-Special-800

If you sent me a message or commented when I asked if anyone was interested in t-shirts, then you will be happy to know they are ordered and I’m just waiting for the company to print them and send them to me. It looks like it will be about two weeks. If you didn’t get a chance to tell me you wanted one, I did order some extras. I will put them up on the FrankenFly online store when I receive the order and see what I have left. Thank you to all who have ordered! I really appreciate your support!

Another big brown caught on Bearded Biscuit!

I’m happy to report that another big brown trout was caught on my (Paul J. Beel) Bearded Biscuit articulated streamer. Donn Vidosh used it to catch this 23 inch brown trout! Simply awesome! If you missed the last one caught on the Bearded Biscuit by Donn, check it out here.

Bearded Biscuit strikes again!

photo

Josh Greenberg of Gates Au Sable Lodge in Grayling, Michigan, sent me this photo this morning with the message, “Happy customers…on the Bearded Biscuit.” These guys caught this awesome Brown on my streamer, the Bearded Biscuit!

I just had to share this, because it made my day! You might wonder why I call it the Bearded Biscuit. It’s simple. It has a beard and it is a biscuit for fish. A snack, if you will. Anyway, this is an articulated streamer with weighted dumbbell eyes. You can fish it with a jigging type action or strip it in at a normal to fast speed. Check out the photos below.

Be sure to check out the FrankenFly online store!

FrankenFly t-shirts are coming!

FrankenFly_Logo-Col-Special-800Now ordering FrankenFly t-shirts! However, it would really help to get some idea of how many people want one. So those of you who are serious about ordering one, please comment on this post or . The next step would have people place an order and then I can order them. Right now, I’m just trying to get an idea to see if it is worth me doing this or not. I plan on two colors of shirts, black and red. Both will have the FrankenFly logo as you see in this post on the front of the shirt. The red shirt will have the logo in a black and white version. It will have www.frankenfly.com on the back. I’m estimating the price will be either $18.99 or $19.99 depending on how many I order. Shipping will be $5.00. Please let me know if you’re interested. Thank you!
