Bleeding Gills Predator Perch – Steve Yewchuck

Steve Yewchuck has been working on this super sexy Perch imitation and so here is more information about the pattern from Steve. Steve also mentions the bulk of the fly is made up from my Werewolf Hair, which I am extremely happy about!
-Paul

Materials list:
Hook – Kona 4/0 BGC
Body – is layered Werewolf Hair from FrankenFly, white, yellowish/orange , green/olive blend
– clump of Pike Skinz predator fibre in toxic.
Head – Raidzap thin and medium UV clear resin with a Flymen Flyfishing Company Living Eyes size 8.5mm Earth
Gill plate – custom shank / red tear drop blades
Leteras Magnum Dub – Pearl , olive and yellow for the head
Black Copic markers – four vertical markings

For gill plate Steve says Pacchiarini’s XS red Wiggle Tails for bleeding gills or red tear drop blades can be used.

Here are some of Steve’s thoughts on his Perch imitation.
“The fly is close to 8 inches long. Perfect adult perch imitation.
As far as bleeding gills, I’ve been playing around with that theory for a while. I’ve used red Wiggle Tails and small spinner blades so it looks like blood coming out of the gills. The red teardrops and Wiggle Tails work the best and give it a great fluttering action which I feel definitely has attracted some finicky Pike. I feel that the gill action definitely has been a trigger.

The fly is super light because it’s tied as a Hollow fly and the Werewolf Hair fibers are the perfect stiffness for movement and building wide-body profiles.

This fly can easily be thrown with a stiffer 8 weight like a predator rod or if you are not comfortable casting larger flies, you can use a 10 weight.”

Tie TV – Zombie Bream

When it comes to fail safe flies for pike fly fishing, nothing comes close to a classic bream imitation. This articulated hook fly by Niklaus Bauer has everything a pike fly needs and it will help you catch many and big pike. By alternating between a Dragon Tail, Wiggle Tail, Wave Tail or a flash tail, you can get many completely different approaches by using one fly.

PSA Deceiver – Paul Monaghan

An articulated Deceiver without bucktail, but instead using a very suitable synthetic alternative called Pike Skinz. I like to have some wiggle in my fly and by tying this way and using the material sparsely it swims real nice. I’ve deliberately not speeded this tutorial up to allow me to explain the steps in more detail and for you to follow and tie along.

Materials List:
Hooks: Ahrex PR320 4/0 & 2/0
Thread: Veevus PB2 140 white
Strung saddle feather white
Pike Skinz in White, Black and Pewter
Predator Fritz pearl
Polar Flash pearl
Strung Fuzzy Fibre orange
Plasterzote block orange
Merino Wool grey and white
Angelina Fibre pearl and blue
10mm Roachie Eyes
Liquid Fusion
DC Fine Flex UV

Flexible Extension – Weedless Bass and Pike Flies – Gunnar Brammer

This style of tying is an adaptation of Derek Filkins HPU – Hook Point Up – series of flies, where he uses Masion’s Hard Mono for the extension. This was only recently brought to my attention and will be noted for future videos tied in this style.

Hey guys, this is an updated tutorial of my Texas Hook Shank Extension video – this update allows you to tie on an extended shank and give you the freedom to tie a multitude of patterns on a Weedless platform, yet the extension, when bumped, will simply flex out of the way. Because the extension utilizes Titanium Wire, it will spring back into place every time, without worry of being kinked, drying out, or being cut by predator teeth such as pike/musky.

Hook: Ahrex Hooks 5/0 Texas Predator
Shank: FlymenFishingCo 25mm Fishspine
Wire: Knot 2 Kinky – 25lb
* for smaller hooks and sizes I’d recommend decreased wire strength for more flexibility and less resistance.
