Ben Paull from OPST – Intruder info

Gig Harbor Fly Shop recently had Ben Paull from OPST in the their shop and did a couple of videos with Ben about Intruders. I wanted to post both for you here because in the interview Ben goes over some important and cool materials for use in your Intruders. In the second video down below, Ben ties an Intruder and shows how it’s done. I’ve really been getting into Intruders lately myself and this is good stuff! Check it out!

Purple Prospector

In this instructional fly tying video Matt Powell demonstrates how to tie his Purple Prospector. Matt favors this shank and trailer hook style fly for Summer Steelhead on our local waters, but we are sure that it will work exceptionally well on the Winter Steelhead, too. The large Tungsten Bead will get this fly down quickly while the rabbit strip and flowing materials create a fly that moves, oh so sweet!

Over Easy Sculpin

TCO Fly Fishing guide, Jake Villwock, designed the Over Easy Sculpin. He had this to say about the fly.

“This fly is an all around fresh water fly, it has caught trout, smallmouth, and steelhead. It can be stripped, swung, or dead drifted. The stinger hook in the back gives you the ability to switch the hook from up facing or down, depending on the style you are fishing it. Crawling on the bottom, go hook up. Swinging or striping it mid current, go hook down. I tie it in olive, brown, black, and tan. It has also been purchased by Orvis. So that’s kinda cool. I am an Orvis signature tier and Regal Vise Pro Staff member.”

Magneto Stone Steelhead Nymph

Tactical Fly Fisher notes: “During my steelhead fishing over the last few years there have been two mainstay flies, which are almost always on my rig. The Magneto Stone is one of them. I generally fish it as the top dropper on a two or three fly Euro nymphing or Czech nymphing rig but it would work just as well with a strike indictor rig. In addition to a lot of steelhead, the Magneto Stone has also caught resident rainbow trout, bull trout, whitefish, and smallmouth bass for me.

In this tutorial you will learn how to tie this fly as well as some helpful tying tips for handling rubber legs and making a more durable fly.”
