It is Mary Dette’s 90th birthday today! If you are a fly tyer and are not sure who that is, then I recommend you do a search on google about Dette Trout Flies. These days called Dette Flies. Mary is a wonderful dry fly tyer in Roscoe, NY in the Catskill area. Her family has a rich history in fly tying. I also recommend the book THE DETTES: A CATSKILL LEGEND BY ERIC LEISER. Please see the photos below.
Dette Flies posted this on their social media today.
“Celebrating Mary‘s 90th birthday today! Mary was born at the Riverview Inn near Ferdun’s Eddy on the Beaverkill.”
“Mary grew up in Roscoe on Cottage Street and lived behind the Willowemoc. She became the second generation fly tyer in the Dette family. Her skills were taught to her by her parents, Walt and Winnie and the three of them continued the Catskill fly tying heritage.”
“For years, she would travel from her home in Long Island to help her parents run the fly shop on Cottage street during fishing season.”
“She later ran the shop herself until her grandson, Joe Fox, became the fourth generation of family tyers to continue this historical lineage. Joe along with his fiancée Kelly Buchta continue to run the shop today.”
