I reached out to Daryl Angler about his carp fly, the Hipster Dufus, after reading an interesting post from him on Instagram. Daryl was inspired to design this fly by Jay Zimmerman. So check out what Daryl has to say about this fly and enjoy the pics from Daryl as well!
“Ahhhh, the Hipster dufus. This is the fly that really moved me in a particular direction with carp flies, and the inspiration came via Jay Zimmerman and one of his trout patterns. Jay had a trout pattern that was and still is crazy productive…his Banksia Bug (you can find it on YouTube here). That pattern was and still is so much fun to tie. It pushed me as a tyer and I find it creative and easy on the eyes. Jay’s Banksia Bug was the motivation behind the Dufus. It was so productive as a trout fly, I wanted to move that over to carp. In fact the original name was Banksia Carp Fly! After hundreds of beta versions of weighting and balancing the pattern I was able to hone in on this design, which is what is offered today. For those who have supported me and have fished the Dufus, THANK YOU!”

A little about Daryl:
Daryl Angler is an avid fly fisherman and fly designer with a focus on carp flies, and he is often hanging with his family, stalking carp on a fly rod, or (yep, you guessed it) tying flies. Shortly after taking a fly tying class in 2017 and learning the importance of proportion and silhouette, carp fly design was close on the horizon. Word is, that he has tied every…single…day since the class started. With attention to detail throughout his designs, all choices are made with intent and purpose resulting in flies that are durable, versatile, and productive. After launching Nervous Water Flies in the Spring of 2019, he is looking to share his designs and help anglers across the country get into carp on a fly.
