Good video with the Intruder master, Jerry French. Intruder style flies are not just effective on steelhead. I’ve tied and used them on smallmouth with great success. They will be effective on a lot of different species. Trust me, give them a try.
Because of the fixed camera angle in this video, you can’t see Jerry work on his composite loops. You will hear them talk about it and talk about making cards for composite loops. I have posted other videos here on FrankenFly where Jerry goes in depth and shows how to do composite loops.
Also, if you are going to learn how to tie Intruder style flies, Jerry was the one who started it all. So he is the one to learn from. I went through a phase where I studied Jerry’s techniques and learned how to do composite loops on my own. I feel like I am a better fly tyer because of it. What I am saying is, this is good stuff, check it out!

Try an Intruder on Largemouth Bass. I was having a generally unproductive day sight fishing for Bucketmouths when I decided to put on one of my Intruders just for grins. In all my many years of fishing I have never seen a fish kick in the afterburner and target a fly so fast. BTW, I had the pleasure of meeting Jerry years ago and he is a fantastic ambassador for our sport.
