Buford in Cotton Candy

From Paul Monaghan:
One of my favourite patterns to tie and fish is the Buford, which was designed by Brad Bohen. The single hook version is really quick and easy once you practise a few. There is no right or wrong way, though hopefully through this tutorial you will get a good idea of material placement and proportion. All you need is bucktail, feathers, optional flash and some imagination.

Materials List:
Hook: Ahrex Hooks Predator Stinger PR320 6/0
Thread: 100/150D GSP
Bucktail: White, grey, blue & pink
Schlappen or Saddle feathers in white, grey and grizzly
Hedron Magnum Flashabou in moonlight

STP Frog Fly

Erik Svendsen just recently posted this fly tying video showing how to tie this super slick frog pattern. With a little searching I believe that Doug Swisher was the designer of this fly pattern. Erik does a great job of explaining how to tie this pattern and has used it with great success. Enjoy!
-Paul

From Erik:
“For the how simple this pattern is it should be a staple in anyones box for top water action in the summer months.

I’ve fished it a couple bass trips over the last few years, but man does the cutters that Tony Tomsu designed with River road Creations make it stupid easy. There are a couple You Tube videos showing off the awesomeness of River Road Creations frog foam cutters, and on their Website it has a step by stop by Tony and also shows Curtis Fry doing an awesome Tube version of this fly.

For this fly, you will need the foam cutters that can be purchased here: https://www.jsflyfishing.com/river-road-stp-frog-foam-body-cutter

And if you want the pre dotted frog foam, you can purchase it here: https://www.jsflyfishing.com/river-road-frog-foam

The Cutter although expensive for the set, dramatically saves time at the vise and makes a more uniform frog pattern especially when matching up two different colors onto the shank of the hook. Tie some up and fish in your favorite colors of foam and legs. As mentioned I don’t usually put eyes on, but it adds to the realism for the fisherman and I do see how maybe these rattle eyes could be of benefit, but I usually lose them and end up fishing with out. ”

The Recipe:
Hook: #Ahrexhooks TP610 #2
Thread: #Semperfliflytying Floro Waxed thread 8/0
Weed Guard: 30 lb Mono
Foam: 2mm foam in two colors
Legs: 1 Tab of rubber legs
Eyes: Not necessary, but craft store rattle eyes

Deer Creek Flies

I wanted to write a post to highlight Deer Creek Flies which is located in Wales, UK and is owned by Nickolas Wright. The company has been around for many years now and has grown in that time. They started out making a very good UV Resin, but have continued to add products and carry many others now as well. Nick has been very generous to me and has helped me out many times.

I have used Deer Creek UV Resin for many years and it actually is a resin that is tack free. Deer Creek has expanded in this area too. Not only do they offer the normal resin, but many others, like Flex, Tungsten, GLO, Sculpt, Stardust Nano Flake, and Builder.

Another product I continue to use is Deer Creek Eyes. They have many different adhesive eye designs. I use the Dragon and Frog eyes for my FrankenFrogs. I have used many of the others for my streamers.
I use their Mega Lazer Dub for my Mama’s Cornbread. It’s a particular type of dubbing that isn’t want you think. You have to use it to see the difference. But it spins up a dubbing noodle very well.

Nick also carries my FrankenDUB Monster Dub over that way now too, which I appreciate. If you want to shop, they have all of their materials available online at https://www.deercreek.co.uk

If you are in the US, Casters Fly Shop continue to carry Deer Creek materials, but I believe Nick will also ship them here as well. If you have any questions, just send them an email from their website.

See below some of the images of the products that Deer Creek carries. Also, Nick has been busy improving his fly tying skills, so I have included photos of his flies.

Michigan’s Best Wet Fly

This fly tying video is from Tim Neal, who is a well respected fly tyer in northern Michigan.
Tim discusses and ties one of his favorite fly patterns. A pattern he refers to as being the best Michigan wet fly out there. Namely a variation of the wet skunk.
