This is a fly that caught my attention as you can see since it was on the Flies Around the Net last month. I asked Capt. Chris Siess about this fly and here is the information he gave me on it. You can follow Chris on Instagram @knottherealworld. He tied this up to target Snakeheads, which is very cool! But of course, this will work for other species as well. See below for all the info.
Capt. Chris said, “Well it’s basically a Dalhberg Diver with a more round head. My friend Jonathan Leavitt and I have been discussing targeting snakeheads in Virginia. He’s a snakehead nut on spin and I’ve gotten a few on fly years ago but none recently, though I haven’t really targeted them. He told me they love frogs, which I knew but he told me to make it big as hell and to make as much noise as possible.”
“I asked him what colors. He said it doesn’t really matter but suggested red, blue and black, for the hell of it I guess. I tied it on a 3/0 B10s with four hackles on each side for legs and Krystal Flash sticking out the back, plus a twisted Palmer and Polar Chenille throat. The rest is a spun deer hair head and I am no deer hair expert. Stick on the dragon eyes and took one look at it and figured I’d call it a Poison Dart Frog based on the colors. Haven’t had a chance to fish it yet!”
“I will fish it on an 8 or 9 weight with floating line around lilly pads for snakeheads, bowfin and bass.”
